Commerce After 10th: A Calculated Career Choice
Decision-making is an important aspect of your career. In school, most of the decisions made by a student are not significant. For example, my decision to pick French as my 3rd language won’t affect the rest of my career much. But after 10th, the students have to make their first big decision. The decision to pick a stream out of science, commerce, and arts. This can be confusing for many students. Because this decision affects the rest of their careers. Commerce is one of the three streams that are offered to the student after 10th. The term commerce has a very wide scope. It includes everything that has to do with trading activities. There are many dimensions to commerce. They are taught as subjects to the students. After 10th, students who pick commerce, study these subjects for 2 years before they give their 12th Board exams for the same. The subjects cover most aspects of business and trade. Since it is a very wide field of study, it is difficult to cover everything in just two years.
The things that the student learns during commerce 11th and 12th are introductory in nature. The student can go on to specialize and learn more about their area of interest.
How Many Subjects Are There In 11th Commerce?
There is a wide range of subjects that are included in commerce after 10th. They depend on the particular board that the student belongs to. But the basic subjects that all commerce students are taught are as follows:-
1. Accountancy
Accountancy is a compulsory subject for the student. It is one of the most important parts of commerce. It is a basic and fundamental subject that every commerce student should be familiar with. At the initial level of the 11th and 12th standard, the students are taught bookkeeping as a part of accountancy. They are introduced to the basic terms of accountancy.
2. Economics
Economics is also usually a compulsory subject. It is a subject that forms the base of commerce. It is a very important subject that the student should pay good attention to. The students learn about some basic theories and concepts of economics.
3. Maths / Statistics
The maths that is taught in commerce is usually similar to maths that is taught in the science stream. It is just a little more application-based. It is usually optional. The maths that the student will learn in commerce after 10th would be advanced maths.
4. Business studies/Management
These subjects include the management side of business and corporations. In this subject, the fundamentals of business are defined and described. They are also taught some basic principles of management.
5. Secretarial Practice
This is a subject that is usually offered as an option. It introduces the student to the profession of the company secretary. They learn all about corporate procedures and structures. They are also introduced to some corporate law as part of this subject.
6. ICT/ Computer Science
The students are also taught the basics of information communication technology. They are introduced to using software such as Tally and Excel. Most colleges have computers as part of their curriculum. However, it needs to have the necessary infrastructure to teach the students effectively.
7. Language
Usually, the student has to opt for languages such as French, German, Hindi, etc. This depends on the languages that the college is offering. It is part of their Board exam curriculum.
These are the basic subjects that all commerce students have to study for their 12th board exams. Aside from this, they also have Physical Education and Environmental Studies. These subjects carry less weightage in the overall aggregate. Picking commerce after the 11th and 12th will give a good base to the student. It will give them a taste of the various faculties of the commerce field. This will help them determine what their career is going to be.
Careers In Commerce After 10th
After 12th there are various courses that a student can opt for based on their experience in commerce after 10th. Following are some career paths that commerce students can consider.

Economics/ Finance
If the student finds economics interesting, they can get a graduate degree in economics and finance like BA/BSc in Economics. There are many interesting careers in this field. They could become a financial analyst, investment banker, equity analyst, etc. All these careers have good scope and interesting opportunities.

Chartered Accountancy
Chartered Accountancy (CA) is a professional course in accountancy. It does not require much money but is quite tough to complete. The student can go for a CA course if they have an aptitude for accounts and math.

Company Secretary
Much like CA, CS is a professional designation that entitles the individual to an important position in companies. CS has good scope as the individual can find well-paying jobs in big companies or earn through their own firm.

BBA
BBA stands for Bachelors in Business Administration. It is a management degree that forms a good base for the individual to go on and get an MBA. It also has specializations such as marketing, Finance, HR, etc. BBA/ MBA degrees have a lot of value in the job market. They are a good option for students with an aptitude for management.

BCom
Bachelors in Commerce is a degree that is more or less in continuation to the things that the student has learned in commerce after 10th. The curriculum is more detailed and advanced. After completing BCom, the student can get an MCom or opt for other courses like CA, MBA, etc
