Welcome to the the Tata Institute of Social Sciences!

As we are evolving as a society, the importance of social science has gained relevance, it being the discipline that offers an insight into society and the relationships between individuals within that society, covering a wide spectrum of subjects, including economics, political science, sociology, history, archaeology, anthropology, and law.  

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, as the name suggests, is one such university in India that focuses on offering the various courses that exist within the realm of social science to aspiring students and interested candidates. Let’s take a closer look at what the college is all about, and what it has to offer to the world at large. 

Tata Institute of Social Sciences: 

Established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956, in the year, 1964.  

It is ranked 37th  under ‘University’ and 70 under ‘Overall’ by the NIRF 2021. The institution offers over 65 PG, doctoral, integrated, certificate, vocational, and online courses in Social Work, Rural Development, Health Sciences and Healthcare, Law, Education, and other similar fields under 20 schools and 45 centers. It also offers MA and PG diplomas in Elementary Education and Digital Library Management programs via its Open Distance Learning (ODL) scheme.  

For all these courses, the university conducts the TISS-NET exam for admission. All the PG courses are of two-year duration except for B.Ed-MEd which is a three-year course. Over the years, the research work carried out at the TISS has been increasingly used for capacity building, field action, academics, and policy advocacy on a spectrum of social, economic, and environmental issues.  

The continuing areas of research include children and youth; climate change; community development; corporate social responsibility; Dalits and tribals; disaster management; education; food security; governance; human rights; labor and migration; mental health; natural resources management; rural development; urban issues; and women and gender.  

Tata Institute Of Social Sciences popularly known as TISS has recently concluded its placement drive for its HRM & LR batch. The highest salary increased by 44%, the average salary increased by 22% & the median salary increased by 19% compared to the last year.  

The Highest salary stood at INR 42.09 LPA. An average salary of INR 23.97 LPA was offered to the students. 42 recruiters visited the campus. Aditya Birla Group was the top recruiter that rolled out the highest number of offers during TISS Mumbai HRM & LR placements 2022. Some of the other major recruiters included Accenture, Nestle, Flipkart, and, Amazon.  

Recent Events held at TISS:  

The institute recently celebrated its long-standing partnership with Monash University, last year,  launching a dual degree with the Australian University on Master of Arts in International Development Practice. This dual degree is not only seen as a step taken by the University toward internationalization, but will also provide knowledge on the political, economic, cultural, and ecological challenges leading to extreme poverty, poor health, fragile governance, inequality, environmental vulnerability, and human insecurity, particularly in the context of emerging economies.  

TISS in Patna is currently holding a Lecture Series on Justice, this lecture was on the topic of “The Caste Question and the Working Class Movement in India”. The university also aims to hold a “Vartalaap For Teacher Educators and Teachers” on April 21st, 2022, from 4 pm onwards on the topic of teaching social science. In the coming year, the institute has scheduled an International Conference on ‘Uncertainty, Social Entrepreneurship, and Role of Technology’ from February 22nd to 24th.  

Over the years, the Institute has made a significant contribution to policy, planning, action strategies, and human resource development. It has done so in several areas, ranging from sustainable rural and urban development to education, health, communal harmony, human rights, and industrial relations.  

TISS has earned recognition as an institution of repute from different Ministries of the Government of India and various State Governments, as well as international agencies such as the United Nations, and the non-government sector, both national and international.  

Since its inception, TISS has had a focus on field activities including in responding to disasters such as the Partition of India the Bhopal disaster, and the Uttarakhand floods. Several TISS initiatives have shaped public policy in India, such as India’s labor welfare laws.  

To date, TISS stands as one of the most renowned and well-known universities to attend, if one is interested in the broad discipline that Social Science is and the various areas of study that it pertains to.
