Who can be a Good Mentor?
Mentors are an important part of personal and professional development as well as career development. They are guides through times when people need someone, who is able to point them in the right direction. Good mentors are enthusiastic people; enjoying the role they play in helping others to achieve their goals. By volunteering as a formal mentor, you will be able to use your career and life experiences to help an aspiring student in their career as well as professional development. The ideal mentor is someone who has the time and a strong desire to help others grow personally and professionally.
A successful mentor must be:
- Highly regarded technically and interpersonally.
- Willing to commit the time and energy to the mentoring process.
- Willing to share knowledge, provide objectives and help to set Career goals.
- Willing to participate in mentoring training to learn the tools of the program and their roles and responsibilities as a mentor.
- Open to feedback and suggestions for improving his/her effectiveness as a mentor.
- Honors the principles of trust, respect, and confidentiality.
A good mentor can help open up career and networking possibilities for a mentee. Thus, finding the right person for the mentor role is an important job. There are several characteristics that you need to have to be a good mentor. This include-Motivation, Communication skills, enjoy learning, Team player, Committed and Positive attitude.
Here are some of the things to look for in a good mentor –
Skilled and experienced in the field and industry:
Employees who have worked in their area of expertise for some time and who have gained experience with the company will be the best fit. A mentor needs to know about their specific job and also have good knowledge about industries.
Communicator:
One of the most important factors in a mentoring is good communication. Therefore, someone who has proven they can communicate positively and effectively will make a good mentor. A mentor will need to provide guidance and give feedback to the mentee. Thus, it is important that they know how to do so without being unhelpful. Rather, a good mentor is trained in the art of communication and can share feedback with others in a positive way. They can make a positive impact on students and professionals by their communication.
Emotionally intelligent:
People who are emotionally intelligent have a good understanding of their own emotions and know how to be sensitive to others. This skill helps a mentor relate better to the mentee. They are often empathetic and can see things from another person’s perspective. Mentors having emotional intelligent can make the very good relationship with mentee and can serve the peoples for long term.
Positive Attitude:
A mentor should have a positive attitude. A positive approach while giving guidance to a mentee will help them to get connected easily.
A good mentor has the capability to help change someone’s life, so one must be fully dedicated while taking up this work.
