Who can be a Good Mentor?

Mentors are an important part of personal and professional development as well as career development. They are guides through times when people need someone, who is able to point them in the right direction. Good mentors are enthusiastic people; enjoying the role they play in helping others to achieve their goals. By volunteering as a formal mentor, you will be able to use your career and life experiences to help an aspiring student in their career as well as professional development. The ideal mentor is someone who has the time and a strong desire to help others grow personally and professionally.

A successful mentor must be:

  1. Highly regarded technically and interpersonally.
  2. Willing to commit the time and energy to the mentoring process.
  3. Willing to share knowledge, provide objectives and help to set Career goals.
  4. Willing to participate in mentoring training to learn the tools of the program and their roles and responsibilities as a mentor.
  5. Open to feedback and suggestions for improving his/her effectiveness as a mentor.
  6. Honors the principles of trust, respect, and confidentiality.

A good mentor can help open up career and networking possibilities for a mentee. Thus, finding the right person for the mentor role is an important job. There are several characteristics that you need to have to be a good mentor. This include-Motivation, Communication skills, enjoy learning, Team player, Committed and Positive attitude.
