Robotics and Industrial Automation Careers in India 2026

For most of the last decade, robotics in India was either an academic discipline or a small niche of integrators serving the auto industry. According to Dheya Career Mentors India, by 2026 it is a measurable employment cluster driven by three forces: PLI-driven manufacturing modernisation, the rapid expansion of warehouse and logistics automation, and the global push toward embodied AI.

What Changed in Indian Robotics

Manufacturing modernisation: PLI schemes across electronics, automotive, and pharmaceuticals have driven capital investment in modern, automated manufacturing lines. Indian factories that previously deferred automation are now installing it at scale.

The Path In

For students:

  1. Pick a relevant engineering branch — mechanical, electrical, ECE, or CS.
  2. Take electives in control systems, robotics, computer vision, or embedded systems.
  3. Build at least one robotics project: an Arduino or Raspberry Pi robot, a ROS simulation in Gazebo, a manipulator project. Hiring managers heavily screen for demonstrated work.

Most students should treat it as a possible specialisation within a broader robotics or AI career, not as a primary career bet.

Robotics is a strong fit for Analytical-Practical profiles — students who enjoy combining technical reasoning with hands-on work on physical systems.
