EV Industry Careers in India 2026: Tata, Ola, Ather, Reliance Hiring

In 2020, electric vehicles were a curiosity in Indian showrooms. According to Dheya Career Mentors India, by 2026 EVs cross 5% of new vehicle sales nationally and over 15% in two-wheelers, and the industry is now one of India's largest engineering employers. The companies hiring at scale — Tata, Ola, Ather, Mahindra, Bajaj, TVS, Reliance, JSW — span automakers, battery manufacturers, charging-network operators, and EV software companies.

This guide maps the live career structure, salary bands, and the RAPD profiles that fit each EV sub-cluster.

Why the EV Career Cluster Stabilised

Three forces drove the inflection: the FAME-II subsidy scheme through 2024 created early demand, the PLI for advanced cell chemistry batteries triggered three Indian gigafactories under construction, and state-level incentives in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka created a manufacturing belt. The result is a structural employer base across cell, vehicle, charging, and software.

Six Career Clusters

1. Battery Cell, Pack, and BMS Engineering

The most technical and best-paid cluster. Hiring at Reliance, Ola Electric Cell Technologies, Exide, Amara Raja, and at battery teams of automakers. Roles span cell chemistry, pack design, thermal management, and battery management systems.

2. Electric Motor and Powertrain

Permanent-magnet motor design, switched-reluctance motors, inverter electronics, transmission integration. Concentrated at Tata, Mahindra, Ola, Ather, Bajaj, and pure-play motor companies.

3. Vehicle Integration and Chassis

The mechanical engineers who actually build the vehicle: chassis, suspension, NVH (noise-vibration-harshness), crash safety, packaging. Indian OEMs hire heavily here as their EV-native vehicles enter production.

4. Charging Infrastructure

DC-fast charger design, charging-network operations, payment and software platforms. Hiring at Tata Power EZ Charge, ChargeZone, Statiq, Reliance BP Mobility, and Adani's electromobility arm.

5. Manufacturing and Process Engineering

Gigafactory and assembly-plant engineers running cell manufacturing, vehicle assembly, and quality processes. Strong fit for production-engineering graduates and a major hiring centre at Sanand (Tata, Ola), Hosur, and Pune.

6. EV Software

Telematics, fleet management, vehicle-cloud platforms, OTA updates, connected-vehicle features. Closer to product engineering than to traditional automotive — and pays accordingly.

Non-Engineering EV Careers

The industry hires extensively beyond engineering:

  • EV Product Management at automakers and software platforms.
  • EV Supply Chain and Procurement, especially for cell sourcing, rare-earth materials, and logistics.
  • EV Finance and Leasing at banks and dedicated EV finance companies (Mufin Green, Revfin, Vidyut).
  • Charging-Network Operations including site selection, utility coordination, and grid integration.
  • EV After-Sales and Service with growing demand as the installed base expands.
  • EV Policy and Government Affairs at OEMs, industry bodies (SMEV, IESA), and consultancies.

The Path In

For students:

  1. Pick the right engineering branch (electrical, mechanical, chemical, or CS) for your target cluster.
  2. Take electives in power electronics, electrochemistry, control systems, or embedded systems as appropriate.
  3. Internships at Tata, Mahindra, Ola, Ather, Bajaj, or TVS during the third or fourth year.
  4. Build a visible project — a battery pack characterisation, a motor controller, an EV simulation. Hiring managers screen for demonstrated work.
  5. Consider an M.Tech in power electronics or electrochemistry for senior research roles.

For mid-career professionals from automotive, electronics, or oil-and-gas: lateral entry is highly viable. EV companies are explicitly hiring for adjacent-industry experience.
